How the funding fee is calculated
Funding is a payment between longs and shorts, not a fee to Binance. It is charged on the position value, not on your margin:
rate above 0: longs pay shorts; rate below 0: shorts pay longs
Example: a 10,000 USDT long with a rate of 0.01% every 8 hours pays 1 USDT per payment, 3 USDT per day. A short of the same size receives the same.
When funding is charged
Most pairs pay every 8 hours, at 00:00, 08:00 and 16:00 UTC. Some pairs pay every 4 hours or every hour. You pay or receive only if the position is open at that exact moment: close a minute before and there is no funding.
Why funding matters with leverage
Funding is taken from the position value, so leverage multiplies it against your margin. At 20x, a normal 0.01% every 8 hours costs about 0.6% of the margin per day. At an extreme 0.1% the same position loses about 6% of the margin per day, even if the price does not move.

FAQ
Who pays the funding fee, longs or shorts?
When the rate is positive, longs pay shorts. When it is negative, shorts pay longs. Binance does not keep it: it only passes the payment between traders.
How often is funding charged on Binance futures?
Usually every 8 hours, at 00:00, 08:00 and 16:00 UTC. Some pairs use 4 hour or 1 hour intervals; the calculator fills in the interval of the pair.
Do I pay funding if I close before the funding time?
No. Funding is paid only by positions open at the funding moment. Closing even a minute before means no payment.
Why is the funding rate so high on some coins?
The rate grows when one side is crowded: many leveraged longs push it up, many shorts push it down. Extreme rates often appear on coins in a strong move.
Does funding change my liquidation price?
In isolated mode funding is taken from the position margin, so paying it moves the liquidation price a little closer. Receiving it moves it a little further.
