How far price can move before liquidation

The move from your entry that liquidates an isolated position, for a small position with a 0.5% maintenance margin. It does not depend on the coin or the price, only on leverage.

How the liquidation price is calculated

Binance closes a position when the margin left in it falls to the maintenance margin, a small share of the position size. For one isolated position with a small size the formula reduces to:

long: entry x (1 - 1/leverage) / (1 - MMR)
short: entry x (1 + 1/leverage) / (1 + MMR)

Example: long BTC at 60,000 with 20x and a 0.5% maintenance rate. Liquidation is at 60,000 x 0.95 / 0.995, about 57,286, a 4.5% drop. The same trade at 10x survives a drop of about 9.5%.

FAQ

What is the liquidation price at 10x leverage?

For a small isolated position with a 0.5% maintenance margin, a long at 10x is liquidated after a drop of about 9.5% from entry, a short after a rise of about 9.5%.

What is the liquidation price at 20x, 50x and 100x?

About 4.5% at 20x, 1.5% at 50x and 0.5% at 100x from entry, in either direction. The table above lists every common leverage.

Does Binance use the last price or the mark price for liquidation?

The mark price. It follows the price on several exchanges, so a short spike on Binance alone does not always liquidate, but a real move does.

Why does Binance show a slightly different liquidation price?

Maintenance rates depend on the pair and position size, and in cross mode other positions and unrealized PnL count too. Set the exact rate in the Advanced field of the calculator.

Does a stop-loss protect me from liquidation?

Only if it sits before the liquidation price and is filled in time. In a fast move the stop can fill worse than planned, so keep it well away from the liquidation price.
